Buenos días 🙂 Hoy es lunes, pero os vengo a hablar de un libro que llega hoy a las librerías y que espero que os apetezca descubrir. Ya sabéis que este año estoy un poco desconectada de la rentrée, pero esta novela llamó mi atención en cuanto la vi. Gracias a la editorial, hoy os puedo hablar de Mis fantasmas de Gwendoline Riley. ¡Desde hoy en las librerías!
Helen Grant siempre ha sido un enigma para su hija. Bridge apenas conserva recuerdos de sus padres antes del divorcio, pero intuye que aquellos años de matrimonio fueron decisivos para moldear una personalidad que a ella se le antoja incomprensible. En la plenitud de su vida y su carrera, Bridge afronta una relación hostil con su madre, a la que apenas ve una vez al año. Aunque es consciente de que Helen siempre ha dejado mucho que desear como figura materna, Bridge pretende tirar del hilo y entender –o quizá simplemente hacer entender a su madre– por qué las cosas nunca terminan de funcionar entre ellas.
¿A quién no le gustan las historias familiares? Y si además sobre madres e hijas, sé que el porcentaje aumenta. Mis fantasmas es una novela que, sin destacar por su originalidad, me ha dejado una impresión curiosamente positiva. La verdad es que la autora construye una historia sencilla, casi íntima, centrada en la compleja relación entre una mujer y su familia. La trama no tiene grandes sobresaltos ni momentos de intensa emoción, pero la autora sabe captar la atmósfera de desconexión y soledad que rodea a sus personajes.
Lo que me ha gustado de este libro es su manera honesta de reflejar los pequeños desencuentros y tensiones familiares, esas relaciones que nunca terminan de ser lo que uno espera, pero que tampoco desaparecen del todo. A pesar de la aparente frialdad en el tono, hay algo de humanidad y cercanía que resuena en cada palabra y párrafo.
La narrativa es sutil, sin grandes giros argumentales ni sorpresas impactantes, lo que lo convierte en una lectura algo lineal. Sin embargo, hay un magnetismo en su sencillez. Riley tiene una prosa concisa, con diálogos que a veces resultan punzantes en su franqueza. A pesar de ser una historia cotidiana, es fácil encontrar reflejos de nuestras propias experiencias en los silencios y en las interacciones tensas de sus personajes.
Gwendoline Riley nació en Londres en 1979 y publicó su primera novela, Cold Water, a los veintitrés años. Desde entonces ha escrito un libro de relatos y cinco novelas más, por las que ha obtenido premios como el Betty Trask Award, el Somerset Maugham Award y el Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. A lo largo de su carrera ha sido nominada a otros prestigiosos galardones como el Folio Prize, el Dylan Thomas Prize y el Women’s Prize for Fiction. En 2018, The Times Literary Supplement la escogió como una de los veinte mejores novelistas británicos e irlandeses en activo. Mis fantasmas es su última novela.
Quizás Mis fantasmas de Gwendoline Riley destaque precisamente por ser un libro sútil, sin grandes giros argumentales y con una experiencia lectora ágil. Es cierto que no lo pondría en la lista de imprescindibles, pero a veces los libros «normalitos» también tienen su encanto, y Mis fantasmas de Gwendoline Riley logra transmitir algo de verdad en su aparente simplicidad.
