Cuando me puse a leer este libro de Tom Rob Smith no tenía muy claro qué clase de historia me iba a encontrar en las páginas de El niño 44. ¿Algo sobre nazis, sobre la II Guerra Mundial? Pues no. El niño 44 de Tom Rob Smith trata un tema sobre el que no recuerdo haber leído antes: la época de la Rusia estalinista.
Corre el año 1953 y Leo Stepanovich Demidov es un prometedor agente del MGB, el servicio secreto ruso, pero es acusado de un delito de traición que no ha cometido y huye de Moscú con su mujer, Raisa. Ambos se refugian en las colinas y descubre que varios niños han sido brutalmente asesinados, un terrible episodio del que el Partido Comunista se desentiende. Deciden pues emprender una investigación por su cuenta para esclarecer esas muertes, a sabiendas de que arriesgan sus vidas y de que tienen en contra a todo el Estado ruso.
Según cuenta su autor, la historia de Leo y Raisa está inspirada en la vida del asesino en serie ruso Andrei Chikatilo, que entre los 70 y 90 asesinó a unas 52 personas, la mayoría de ellos niños.
Al libro hay pocas pegas que ponerles ya que el ritmo no decae y, aunque trate sobre una historia de asesinato y misterio, refleja la vida y los miedos de la población de la Rusia de Stalin. Por lo que a mí respecta, no recuerdo haber leído nada de esa época y me ha gustado porque, mientras el mundo se recuperaba de las atrocidades de la Alemania nazi, en Rusia se desarrollaban otras “actividades” de dudosa legalidad pero que no son tan conocidas. Los asesinatos, las persecuciones, el miedo, el silencio y el terror tienen un papel protagonista en la Rusia de aquella época y está fielmente reflejado en el libro.
Además, como dato curioso, el libro ha sido vendido, y con éxito, en más de 30 países pero no encuentra editor en Rusia. El autor da su versión de esto en una entrevista publicada en El Mundo en 2008. Smith especula y dice que a lo mejor alguien piensa que se escribió con un propósito oculto, pero es que en cuanto leyó el caso de Chikatilo supo que tenía que contar su propia versión y jamás se le pasó por la cabeza localizar la historia en ningún otro sitio. Smith tuvo que «aprenderlo todo» sobre la Unión Soviética para poder montar la historia y fue ahí cuando se dio cuenta de que tendría «aún más fuerza» trasladar la historia de los 80 a los 50.
Así, este inglés ha conseguido crear un thriller en una época poco tratada por la literatura y el resultado es bastante bueno.

Me gustó mucho el libro, sobre todo por lo bien documentado que está sobre la época stalinista. La verdad, me sorprendió mucho positivamente.

No conocía este libro, yo tampoco me he leído nunca nada de esta epoca de Rusia. Parece muy interesante el tema, me lo apunto en la lista de pendientes, lista que nunca deja de crecer cuando visito los blogs. Me encanta eso de poder aconsejarnos libros de los que no habíamos oido ni hablar.

Carol, si la verdad es que es bastante interesante porque une dos factores el primero está claro que es la época en la que está narrado a la que creo que es bastante fiel y la segunda porque al ser una novela negra tiene un ritmo tremidante y la trama está bien construida y no aburre. Si a eso le añadimos que el autor se basó en hechos reales para escribirla gana puntos.
Por el tipo de letras ya me imaginaba que los tiros iban a ir los la Rusia soviética, la verdad es que me parece un libro my interesante, estamos ya saturados de tantas novelas situadas en la II GM, cuando la época stalinista no se trata tanto. Bsos

Bien me vendría esta época y escenario que tan poco he leído, y sí parece que engancha. En fin, lo apunto dentro de mi lista de novelas negras para cuando tengan su oportunidad.

He leído varias reseñas de este libro y todas coinciden en que es un buen libro. Me interesa el tema de una Rusia estalinista, un pasado no demasiado alejado de nuestros días. Si te ha gustado te recomiendo ‘Una mujer en Berlín’.

Ahora que lo pienso, yo tampoco he leído nada de esa Rusia stalinista, así que por ahí la novela ya tiene puntos para que la lea. Pero será mucho más adelante, cuando me lea algunos libros que llevan en mi lista de pendientes hasta años.

dijiste pronto y desde luego cumples con creces. bueno creo que yo tampoco he leido nada de la Rusia Stalinista en literatura, pero si que se que es un periodo oscuro, y tan malo como la epoca nazi, pero como lo tenían detras del telon de acero Europa recuperandose de una guerra no le hizo mucho caso y USA los mantuvo vigilados. No me extraña que no encuentre editor en Rusia ni creo que lo encuentre jamás. Le has dado un empujoncito al libro, aunque ahora mi ritmo es muy pausado, quizás demasiado
Lo leí hace unos meses y aunque me gustó, hasta la mitad más o menos no conseguí engancharme realmente, la primera parte se me hizo un poco pesada… quizás me había hecho otra idea después de leer tan buenas críticas. Besos
